Leo was born on September 25, 1929 in Burlington, Colorado to Emil and Pauline (Gramm) Schaal.  He was one of eight children born to this union, six boys and two girls.

He was baptized in 1929 by Rev. C.E. Meadche and confirmed August 27, 1944 by Rev. H.G. Schurr at Hope Congregational Church.

He met Helen Louise Gulden and later married her on May 19, 1968 at the Hope Congregational Church north of Bethune, Colorado.

He served on the Hope Congregational Church Board for several years and sang in the Men’s choir.  He was a lifelong member of Hope Congregational Church north of Bethune.  He helped in the rebuilding of the church when it was destroyed in the Tornado in 1993.
