Aleja G. Nunez July 17, 1938 – July 18, 2025
Aleja G. Nunez, age 87, of Burlington, Colorado, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, in Grand Island, Nebraska, surrounded by her loved ones.
Aleja was born on July 17, 1938, in Juan Aldama, Zacatecas, Mexico, to Domingo Garcia and Eulalia Alvarado. She later made her home in Burlington, Colorado, where she spent more than three decades serving her community with dedication and pride as a housekeeper at Kit Carson Memorial Hospital for 32 years.
Known for her kind heart and unwavering faith, Aleja had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and loved. She had a deep devotion to her Catholic faith and a quiet strength that uplifted those around her. Aleja loved reading her Bible, gardening, cooking for her family, and offering her wisdom with grace and humility. She had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor—always ready with a playful joke or clever remark to lighten the mood. She was honest and direct, never afraid to give a little tough love when it was needed, always rooted in care. She loved teaching others to speak Spanish and would patiently correct your pronunciation until you got it just right—always with a smile. She also had a special gift for giving nicknames to those she loved—each one a reflection of her affection and personality. Her greatest joys came from spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—especially with a nice, cold Pepsi in hand. She was the heart of her family and a source of strength, warmth, and unconditional love to all who knew her.
Aleja was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Ramon Nunez, two brothers, two sisters, and many uncles, aunts, cousins, and dear friends. She was the last surviving sibling in her family.
She is survived by her devoted husband Ignacio Avalos; daughters Socorro Cuellar and Sandy Nunez; sons Raymond Nunez and Eduardo Nunez; and her beloved grandchildren: Ramon Jr. Cuellar, Aleja Tappy, Joel Cuellar, Sally Orrantia, Roberto Ray Nunez, Jacquelyn Nunez, Brenda Nunez, and Eduardo Jr. Nunez. She also leaves behind fifteen great-grandchildren who will carry on her memory with love and pride.
A Rosary will be held on August 4th at 6:00 PM at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Funeral services will follow on August 5th at 10:00 AM, also at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Burlington, Colorado.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all family and friends for their prayers, love, and support during this time.
Aleja’s life was one of faith, service, and love. Her memory will forever live in the hearts of those she touched.
As she always reminded us in times of joy and hardship:
“Ten fe en Dios, todo va a star bien.” (Have faith in God, everything will be okay.)
