Alta Ethel Holmes Gwyn passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at the age of 90.
Alta was born in a farm house outside of Seibert, Colorado to Glen and Carrie Wood. In 1941 her family moved to Genoa, Colorado where she worked as a waitress at The Genoa Tower.
On September 22, 1946 she married Clayton Holmes. To this marriage six children were born; Bev Palmore of Hugo, Russell Holmes deceased of Limon, Mary Gonzalez of Hugo, Karen Rudder of Limon, Ted Holmes of Genoa and Janet Hobson of Limon.
Clayton and Alta lived north of Genoa until 1964 when they moved into the town of Genoa. In 1966 Alta went to Genoa School to finish her education and graduate with her oldest daughter in Beverly. In 1968 Alta rented the Cottage Café and purchased it in 1970, Alta ran it until 1984. In 1985 Alta venture to Denver where she worked various jobs and took care of her mother Carrie.
In 1999 Alta moved back to Genoa. At this time she met Albert Gwyn of Burlington and they were united in marriage in 2004. Together they lived in Burlington where they raised and took care of several horses until Albert passed away in 2007. Alta moved back to Genoa and worked in Hugo cooking for seniors and cooked at the Lincoln County Jail.
Alta started a card playing club at the Genoa Legion Hall that she enjoyed on Fridays. Alta also loved delivering food to several people in her community.
Her hobbies were collecting old glass and whiskey decanters.
Her family was very important to her.
Alta is preceded in death by her parents Glen and Carrie Wood, her husbands; Clayton Holmes and Albert Gwyn, two brothers Loyd Wood and Glen Jr. Wood, two sisters Ruby and Doris, her son Russell Holmes, one grandchild Van Hobson.
Alta is survived by her children; Beverly, Mary, Karen, Ted and Janet. She is also survived by several grand, great and great great grandchildren.
Alta will be missed by her many friends in the communities, her family and all who knew her.
