Bernard A Kelly

Bernard A. Kelly, a longtime resident of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, began his journey to his eternal home on September 20, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Pat; his wife, Bonnie; and his son, James.

Bernard was born on April 14, 1929, in Britton, South Dakota, to Ambrose E. and Elsie C. (Becker) Kelly. One of two children, he grew up in Britton and graduated from Britton High School in 1947.

After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1947. He served as a paratrooper and glider man with the 504th Parachute Infantry and as a platoon leader in the Intelligence and Resonance Section. He was honorably discharged in 1950 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

He married the love of his life, Bonnie L. Bowerman, on August 29, 1953, in Greeley, Colorado, and they had five children. He attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, earning a bachelor’s degree in language arts education and a master’s degree in school administration in 1959.

Bernard served the Cheyenne Wells school district for 27 years as a teacher, principal, and superintendent, completing a 30-year career in education. He and Bonnie enjoyed dancing, dinner dates, and attending most community activities. Bonnie died on June 15, 2005, at age 71. After Bonnie’s passing, he enjoyed reading Western novels.

He is lovingly remembered by his four children: Kathleen Kelly of Arvada, Colorado; Sheila and her husband, Nick Gallegos, of Clarence Center, New York; Kevin Kelly of Finger, Tennessee; and Maureen (Kelly) Lang of Redondo Beach, California. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.

In accordance with Bernard’s wishes, he will be cremated and interred with his beloved wife, Bonnie, in the Kelly family plot in Britton, South Dakota. A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernard and Bonnie will be held in Britton at a later date.
