Dianna Kay Brouwer

March 26, 1945 — December 4, 2019

Dianna Kay Brouwer (Edwards) was the 3rd child born to JT and Jaunita Edwards.  She was born on March 26th 1945 in Dodge City KS (Mom always said she was the daughter of Matt Dillon, from Gun Smoke) and brought home to the Edwards family farm in Fowler KS.  In 1950 JT and Jaunita moved their little family to Flagler CO where Kay would live for the rest of her days.

In 1952, at the age of 7, Kay was baptized and welcomed the Lord into her life.  From 1st grade to her senior year Kay attended Flagler Public School.  During Kay’s junior year of school she was homecoming queen candidate.  (But she didn’t win)… Kay and Gene went to school together 1st thru 12th grade, and were madly in love from the 2nd grade on.  They got to enjoy 50 years of marriage together before Gene passed away December 14th 2014.

They were united in marriage on July 24th 1964 at the Flagler Baptist Church.  They made their 1st home in the Grade School Apartments.  Their next home was on the Baughman farm ranch south of Flagler.  This is where they raised cattle for the Baughmans.  During their time south of Flagler they were overjoyed with the arrival of their 1st (and most likely their favorite son) Lonnie Eugene who was born on August 21st 1965.

The new families’ next adventure was a move to a farmhouse north of Flagler where they lived for several years (this is where Jake and Lila made their final home and Lonnie and Buffy presently live).  While they were at this home, on November 16th 1967, they welcomed their 2nd bundle of crazy joy, Marion Lynn, into the family.  In 1969 Kay and Gene purchased the land and house where they spent the rest of their lives.   Here they spent many years remodeling and making improvements to their home and adding storage buildings and modern grain handling facilities.  They also had a cow/calf operation and then transitioned into a yearling feeder operation.

During harvest, Kay’s favorite truck to drive was a blue 1960 Chevy.  That was her truck.   She’d sit in it all day long, in the heat, without complaint, swatting flies.  During the summers when Kay would have the house windows open she could be heard all around the farm singing to her favorite country music.  She loved to cook for her family and for the hired help on the farm.  Kay also insisted on a clean and tidy home.    On one of Kay’s cleaning times, she discovered one of her sons (he will remain anonymous) girly magazines.  When said son went to look at his magazine, he had discovered that his mother had marked out all of the good parts with a magic marker and returned it to its hiding spot.

Kay’s other pursuits off the farm included raising beagle and cocker spaniel puppies together with her brother-in-law Floyd Weatherly.   Then she purchased the video store on main street and rented out movies.  Her final job away from home was working at the Country Store for 9 years where her special relationship with Buffy Isenbart began.

Some of her other enjoyments in life were traveling with family to Hawaii, Canada, and the Bahamas on a cruise ship.  She also traveled to Las Vegas, the Black Hill and Mt Rushmore, and to a balloon festival in New Mexico.

Kay began her battle with cancer in 1991 and fought it many years.   In the last 3 years of her battle with cancer her daughter-in-law Buffy and Kay made many trips to the city for treatments.  Along their journeys they met many loving and terrific people and shared precious times together.   Dianna Kay passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 4 at Swedish Hospital, she was fortunate to have Buffy right by her side, along with her beloved sisters Marie and Francis, and favorite brother David and sister-in-laws Pat Edwards and Janet Brandt.

We always say  “Everybody needs a Buffy.”

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Donald Eugene, niece Lori Hill, nephew Tim Weatherly, parents JT and Jaunita Edwards, mother and father-in-law Lila and Jake Brouwer, brothers –in-law Jim Hill and Floyd Weatherly, and sister-in-law Wanda Faivre.
