On January 17, 1928 Doyce was born at home near McCoy, Texas. The doctor named her Alice Jane, but her folks renamed her Doyce Jane. Doyce was born to George and Dora Breeding. Doyce was the second child of four. She had an older brother George Jr. who died at 17 years old and a younger sister, Neoma, and brother, Paul.
The farm in Texas near Petersburg was small so the family worked hard to make a living. Doyce planted the wheat crop with a team of horses in the fall of 1945 before she left for college. Doyce attended Waylon Baptist Junior College at Plainview and graduated with an Associate’s Degree. She then went to West Texas Teacher’s College now called West Texas A&M at Canyon, Texas. Doyce worked her way through college paying for it by herself. She graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor’s of Art – a major in English and a minor in Spanish. Doyce taught one year at Silverton, Texas. A neighbor who had served during WWII, Avery Fisher, farmed beside her father’s place kept hanging around her dad’s farm until he convinced Doyce to go out with him. On February 3, 1951 Avery and Doyce were married at Petersburg, Texas. They had 2 sons Larry and Lee. In March of 1962 Avery, Doyce, Larry, and Lee moved to the farm and ranch north of Limon. Doyce lived there until December 2017 when she moved to the Lincoln County Community Care Center at Hugo. Doyce worked hard for her family by sewing clothes, raising a garden, canning food, she even took a Tandy Correspondence Course for Leathercraft and taught 4-Hers how to do it. Doyce taught school at Woodlin for a few years and then substituted for many years. She was in CowBelles, Home & Demonstration Club, a Master Farm Homemaker, 4-H leader, and active in church. After her family was raised she took up china painting. She helped chase cattle, pull calves, fix fence, run a tractor, and take care of grandkids. She got bored at 71 and cooked for the Senior Citizen Center for a year. Then at 72, she was hired at Limon Child Development Center where she worked for the next 10 years. Doyce enjoyed her great-grandchildren and retirement until she passed away. Doyce made many friends wherever she was and will be missed by her family, neighbors, and friends. Doyce was baptized as a teenager and her faith sustained her throughout her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Avery, 2 brothers, her parents, and one granddaughter. She is survived by one sister, Neoma Turner of Lubbuck, Texas, her sons, Larry Fisher of Severance, Lee and wife Bette Jo Fisher of Limon, grandson Byron and wife Becky Fisher of Greeley, grandson Justin and wife Chandra Fisher of Limon, granddaughter Janel Fisher of Windsor, and eight great-grandchildren.
Doyce passed away on August 16, 2019 and finally got her wish to go home. Doyce’s service will be held on Saturday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the High Plains Baptist Church and will be interned at Limon Pershing Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given to the Lincoln County Community Care Center at Hugo or Walks Camp Park Association at 23758 CR 3W.5.
