Ena (Mary) D. Kinkade

December 9, 1926 — December 26, 2017

Ena (Mary) Kinkade went to her heavenly home on December 26, 2017. She was born on December 9, 1926 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was the eighth girl of the family and first to be born in a hospital. Thus her first name Ena was after the attending nurse and her middle name Donald was because her Dad wanted a boy. Mary was raised in the Ellicott, Colorado area east of Colorado Springs. Her family farmed, milked cows and had pigs, sheep and chickens. She and her sister Polly were often left to do the chores at the ages of 8 and 9, while their parents would leave for a week at a time to farm leased ground down in the Drennan area. The family moved to Lincoln County in 1940. Mary graduated high school in 1943 from Henry Center. She began her teaching career in 1945, but did not have her college degree until 1963 from Colorado State College. She taught in the one room schools of Cocklebur, Community Center, Valley, J.R. Hall and Forder. She closed each one of these schools. She then continued her teaching at Edison and Ellicott Schools until her retirement in 1982. Mary married the love of her life John William (Bill) Kinkade on August 14, 1945 in Syracuse, Kansas while he was on furlough from the United States Air Force. They had two daughters, Maryln Corrine in 1948 and Joanne in 1951. Bill was a rancher and Mary a school teacher. They bought their place in 1946 and continued adding land as the years went by. They were the first to own and raise Charolais cattle in the area. They loved branding day when they helped neighbors and neighbors helped them. Bill passed away in 1996 and Mary stayed on the place until 2002 and then moved to Colorado Springs. Bill and Mary became charter members of Kendrick Bible Church on January 14, 1954 when they held their first organizational meeting and on October 17, 1954 their first worship service was held in their new church. Mary attended Beacon Hill Baptist Church while living in Colorado Springs Mary is preceded in death by her husband Bill Kinkade, daughter Corrine Golding, parents Harry and Mable (Sturdivan) Hickle, sisters and brother in laws Fred and Eleanor Huggins, Wallace and Dorothy Miles, Bob and Ruth Skilling, Earl and Margaret Reed and brother in law Sam Lindt.
