Helen Nan Pierson, 73, passed away on November 15, 2025. She was born on June 11, 1952, to Dorothy and Thomas Fairbairn. Helen grew up with a strong sense of compassion, a giving heart, and an unwavering love for family—qualities that defined her entire life.
Helen graduated from East High School in 1970 and soon after followed her passion for beauty and creativity by attending Beauty School. She earned her Cosmetology license in 1971, beginning a career that would span over 40 years. She first practiced in Pueblo, Colorado, working at Fairmont and Joan’s House of Beauty. After moving with her family to Hugo, Colorado, Helen opened Steel Magnolia’s Beauty Shop, which she proudly owned and operated for 30 years until her retirement. Her clients were more than customers—they were part of her extended family.
On August 26, 1973, Helen married the love of her life, Don Pierson. When they married, Don was already the devoted father of three children—Steve, Debbie, and Patty—whom Helen lovingly welcomed into her heart as her “bonus kids.” In January 1976, Helen and Don were blessed with their daughter, Monica. Don and Helen shared many joyful years together until Don’s passing on November 30, 2007.
Helen’s nurturing nature extended far beyond her immediate family. She proudly adopted her grandchildren, Josh and Courtney Thelen, raising them with boundless love and dedication until they graduated from high school. She cherished each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, delighting in their accomplishments and celebrating them at every opportunity.
Helen was known for her incredible Colorado Green Chili, a recipe so beloved that after her retirement she continued making it for a local coffee shop in Limon, Colorado. She also treasured the holiday season, especially making Christmas candy—a tradition she once shared with Don and continued throughout her life, gifting sweet treats to family, friends, and neighbors.
Throughout her life, Helen was the first to lend a helping hand. Her generosity knew no limits—she would give her last dollar if she thought it could ease someone’s burden. Those who knew her felt deeply the warmth, loyalty, and kindness she poured into the world.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Thomas Fairbairn; her husband, Don Pierson; her brother, Tommy Fairbairn; her grandson, Michael Fawkes; and her sister, Linda Fairbairn, who heartbreakingly passed away just one day after Helen on November 16, 2025.
She is survived by her sister, Sandra Gray; daughter, Monica Thelen (Jeff Bain); her bonus son, Steve Pierson (Donna); her bonus daughters, Patty Fawkes and Debbie Irvine (Scott); her grandchildren—Josh Thelen, Courtney Thelen, Amber Pierson, Andy Fawkes, Jessica Fawkes, Savannah Kimble, Jennifer Irvine-Macklin, and Scotty Irvine; and twelve beloved great-grandchildren.
Helen was dearly loved by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her, and her legacy of love, laughter, generosity, and family devotion will continue to live on in their hearts. She will be deeply missed.
