Howard James Matthews

Howard James “Jimmy” Matthews, 83, of Flagler, Colorado, passed away on March 24, 2026.

Jimmy was born on September 7, 1942, in Goodland, Kansas, to Bud and Edna Matthews.

He lived life on his own terms, with a strong spirit, a quick wit, and a deep appreciation for the people around him.

Jimmy was a professional steer wrestler and a lifetime member of the PRCA (#8091), earning numerous rodeo wins including Kit Carson (1965), Lamar (1968), and Douglas, Wyoming (1973). He was proud of his time working for Kit Carson County, where he dedicated himself to maintaining roads and serving his community. Jimmy was also a Vietnam-era veteran who served as a tank driver in Germany.

He had a love for rodeo, golf, poker, and old westerns, and was known for his humor and unforgettable one-liners. Jimmy had a way of bringing people together, and he built many lasting friendships over the years. Above all, he was a loving father and someone who created a lifetime of great memories.

He is survived by his son, Tate; his brother, Denny (Marie) Matthews; his sisters, Eunice Weber and Susy (Leland) Lile; his sister-in-law, Noel Matthews; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbie Matthews; his parents, Bud and Edna Matthews; his brother, Jay Dee Matthews; his twin siblings, Bonnie and Donnie Matthews; his sister-in-law, Shirley Matthews; his brother-in-law, Johnny Weber; his nephew, Richard Matthews; and his great-niece, Lilly Hasker.

A memorial service will be held on April 30, 2026, at the Congregational Church in Flagler, Colorado, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Flagler American Legion Honor Guard, or the Flagler Congregational Church.
