Laura Elizabeth Howe Stone was born to Arthur and Dora Howe in Genoa, Colorado on March 4, 1927, the tenth of thirteen children. She was raised in the Genoa area and attended schools in Genoa, Bovina and Limon as well as the Ramsey and Anderson schools. She met Lyle Stone in her junior year, dating off and on, becoming serious when she was a senior in high school. When Lyle was drafted into the Army and left for boot camp, she went to Kansas City, Kansas to stay with relatives. She began working with the Hallmark Brothers company and taking evening classes in business. Before being shipped out overseas, Lyle sent her an engagement ring, and they were married when he returned from serving with the occupation forces in Japan. They were married in Limon Colorado on January 24, 1948. The first years of their marriage were spent on Lyle’s grandparents’ homestead south of Flagler, Colorado. While he was farming, Laura worked in town at the bank and later at the Flagler Coop as a bookkeeper. When Lyle decided to use the GI bill to attend radio school, they moved to Denver, Colorado and she worked for an income tax company. During this time, three sons were born, Marvin Lyle, Connie Lee and Lenny Ray. After Lyle graduated from the Western Radio Institute, they returned to Flagler, Colorado to establish Lyle’s TV and Radio Service, initially the business was ran out of their home, then eventually located on main street in Flager. Their fourth child, Peggy Joyce, a daughter was born shortly after their return to Flager and a son, Kelvin Eugene, was welcomed to the family three years later, with another daughter, Laure Beth completing their family.
Laura and Lyle ran a successful business well over fifty years. Laure retired when she was seventy-five from Lyle’s TV & Radio but kept busy with family gatherings, quilting, crocheting and reading. She was the treasurer of the Flagler Historical Society and was a member of the Flagler Congregational Church.
After sixty years of marriage, Lyle passed in 2009, Laura continued to honor his commitment to the Flagler Historical Society. On June 26, 2025, at the age of ninety-eight (98), she passed on after a short hospitalization. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Stone, her parents, Arthur and Dora Howe, eleven (11) siblings, including Minnie Howe, Curtis Howe, Gerald Howe, Eula Fisher, Sylvia Jones, Guy Howe, Loren Howe, Norma Bylsma, Roy Howe, Alice Baldwin, and Betty Wardrop. Her oldest son, Marvin and his wife Bonnie and her son Connie also proceeded her in death.
She is survived by her sons, Len (Nola) Stone of Flagler, Colorado and Kelvin (Lucy) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, her daughters, Peggy Stone-Saguid of Flagler, Colorado and Beth (Rick) Pelton of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado. She is also survived by her sister, Fern Balaun of Littleton, Colorado, fourteen (14) grandchildren, Robyn (Krystyn) Stone of Meade, Colorado, Collin (Jenn) Stone of Meade, Colorado, and Apryl (Chris) Huelskamp of Genoa, Colorado, children of Connie Stone. Randy (Angie) Stone of Flagler, Colorado, Christopher (Carla) Stone of Limon, Colorado, and Laurie (Tyler) Sorensen, of Flagler, Colorado, children of Len (Nola) Stone. Tiani (Bryson) Moses of Pe’epekeo, Hawaii, and Maika (Bernadette) Saguid of Las Vegas, Nevada, children of Peggy Stone-Saguid. Daniel (Danielle) Stone of Seaside, California, Thomas (Shelsea) Stone of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Brittany Fleury of Daleville, Alabama and Jessica Stone of Panama City, Florida, children of Kelvin (Lucy) Stone. Tyler Pelton of Fort Myer, Florida and Amber Pelton of Cape Coral, Florida, children of Beth (Rick) Pelton.
Twenty-nine (29) great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Flagler Historical Society in Flagler, Colorado and the Lincoln Health Hospice in Hugo, Colorado.
