Milton L Mathis (Uncle Milt) was born in Limon Colorado to Joe and Myrtie Mathis. Milt and his five siblings were raised on a farm/ranch about 15 miles west of Agate Colorado. Milt loved school and was a great student and was Salutatorian of his class. He attended Lamar Jr. College with a degree in Animal Science. Milt met many lifelong friends there. One special friend was Mary Mead. Milt and Mary were married on September 17, 1960, about 6 months after they met. 15 months later, they had their first child Mike born November 28, 1961. Milt and Mary moved to Fort Collins for Milt’s education. He worked nights at Ranch Way Feeds to support his family and graduated from college in 1965 with a business ag degree. After graduation, Milt managed the Douglas County Grain elevator in Castle Rock Colorado for three years. He decided to use his education and was hired by the Farmers Home Administration as a loan officer. The family moved to Burlington, Colorado where on March 20, 1967 they welcomed their second child, Melanie Jo. In December 1969 Milt was recruited by the Farmers State Bank in Calhan where he worked his way up and eventually became the president. Milt loved to watch his children play sports and spent many evenings and weekends in their motor home traveling to events. Milt and Mary gradually switched from sporting events to many days spent at the lake camping and waterskiing with their kids and now their spouses Mike and Julie and Melanie and Lee. Melanie and Lee were blessed with three children, Garrett, Brittany, and Caleb. With the grandkids, watching sporting events became the new normal. Milt’s family grew again as the grandkids dated and married, adding Garrett’s Maggie, Brittany’s Dakota and Caleb’s Reese. Milt loved to travel and fish for flounder with his father. Later did fly-in fishing trips with his son and friends. He enjoyed playing golf and riding his motorcycle and ATV. After retirement in 2000 Milt continued working with Mountain View Electric as a member of the board of directors. Milt and Mary traveled across the United States enjoying time with colleagues and friends. Milt had a great sense of humor and a slight ornery streak. He loved to turn on your car seat heater when you weren’t looking, particularly on a hot summer day. He will be terribly missed by family and friends.
Please join the family for a Memorial Service being held on Friday, May 9th, 2025 at 10 A.M. at Living Word Church in Calhan, Colorado.
