Verna M. Purdy

Verna Mae Purdy was born September 1, 1924, to Vernon Matthews and Florice Logan Matthews in Agate, Colorado. She grew up in the area and graduated from Agate High School.  From there, she moved to Denver to attend the Central Business College in Denver.  She was a stenographer for the H. J. Heinz Company and later for the Schwayder Brothers whose Samsonite Luggage offices were in Denver. She also worked in the USO in Denver.  She married Leo Purdy in 1944. During Leo’s deployment, he had been injured after his destroyer was torpedoed in the South Pacific and was eventually stationed at Mare Island until he was discharged under the points system when the war ended. Verna would join Leo at Mare Island and worked there. She worked in the transportation office which handled travel reservations for returning service men.   After Leo had been discharged, they returned to Agate where they ranched from then on. They both retired to Limon, CO where they both were actively involved in the community, while continuing to be active on the family ranch. She served on several boards of organizations in Agate and Limon.  Verna loved music; loved to dance; loved to golf; loved to cook. Verna is survived by sons Dale (Sandy) and Mark and their families along with her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, and her great-great grandchildren.  She is preceded by husband Leo, and daughter-in-law Kathy.
